On February 22, 2025, Middletown-Portland SDA (MPSDA) church hosted Hope in Harmony, a benefit concert for the California wildfires relief, raising over $1000 in one afternoon.
This event was the brainchild of Kyle Slingo, MPSDA’s social media coordinator and AV team member, who worked with Joseph and Lily Rus from the Three Angels church to organize it. Musicians from six area churches, including one Northeastern Conference church, contributed to the Sabbath afternoon concert. About 65 people filled the church, a place where Sabbath morning attendance is usually around 25. The attendees enjoyed the quality of the music, the opportunity to count their blessings and praise God together, and refreshments afterward.
Some highlights of the concert were the children: Quintus Halai from the Connecticut Valley church recited 1 Corinthians 13 with pathos and eloquence rarely heard even in adults, and Rikka Slingo from the MPSDA church accompanied herself on piano as she sang. She also played guitar with the Three Angels church guitar ensemble/choir. “I would pay $1000 for tickets to hear Rikka play and sing and Quintus recite!” exclaimed Jean Rene, a soloist from Faith SDA church.
