Southern New England Conference (SNEC) administrators and staff recently brought an emotionally uplifting program and compassionate care to Sterling Village Nursing Home. Sponsored by SNEC Adventist Community Services (ACS), this outreach aimed to support the residents through engaging activities and music and was a testament to the commitment of SNEC staff to serve and uplift the community.
The event began with introductory remarks from the Sterling Village activity director, setting a warm and welcoming tone. Yves Francis, SNEC ACS director, then delivered his remarks and offered an invocation prayer, formally starting the program. The event was meticulously designed to ensure that the nursing home residents received both entertainment and therapeutic benefits.
Audrey Folkenberg, the director of stewardship, planned giving and trust services, known for her creativity, led the residents in various activities using stress balls, designed to entertain and offer therapeutic benefits. The highlight of this segment was the Folkenberg’s little dog, Didi, whose performance brought immense joy and laughter to the residents.
Norys Agudelo, the associate secretary for human resources, Cacilda Morris, the administrative assistant for the education department, and Folkenberg served as the musical team. Folkenberg, also acting as the pianist, curated a collection of familiar and nostalgic songs that resonated with the residents. Lyrics were provided to encourage sing-along participation.
Bob Folkenberg, Jr., SNEC president, told the story of his experience as a novice skier and his bone-chilling, three-hour attempt to ski down a mountain, illustrating how when we face challenges, we have the choice to give up or turn our eyes to God for help. His narrative added a heartfelt touch to the program, allowing the residents to connect with him in a personal way.
The program was a resounding success, bringing joy to the residents and positively impacting the facility staff. Combining creative activities, musical engagement, and heartfelt storytelling created a memorable and enriching experience for all participants.
This event marked the beginning of what promises to be a series of similar outreach programs, aiming to bring light and joy to those in need. “The success of this first event sets a positive precedent for future initiatives,” says Francis. “We look forward to the next opportunity to make a difference.”
